What is Medicare Supplement Insurance?Medicare supplement (Medigap) insurance can help pay some of the health care costs that original Medicare does not cover, like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.
Some Medigap policies also offer coverage for services that Original Medicare doesn't cover, like medical care when you travel outside the U.S. If you have Original Medicare and you buy a Medigap policy, Medicare will pay its share of the Medicare-approved amount for covered health care costs. Then your Medicare supplement insurance policy pays its share. A Medigap policy is different from a Medicare Advantage Plan. Those plans are ways to get Medicare benefits, while a Medigap policy only supplements your Original Medicare benefits. Original Medicare, also known as Part A and B covers roughly 80% of your medical expenses. The cost of this coverage is dependent on your income. View the Income Chart. If you're new to Medicare, call Social Security to get enrolled: (800) 772-1213 The second piece of the puzzle is the Medicare Supplement, also known as "MediGap". This policy fills the 20% "Gap", and leaves you with little or no deductible. Costs start at around $50 per month, and increase over time, and for plans with lower deductibles. Each year around your birth month, we can shop other plans and enroll with no medical underwriting (guaranteed issue). So long as your provider accepts Medicare, they'll accept the Medicare Supplement! The third and final piece of the puzzle is the Part D Prescription Drug Coverage. The cost of this plan is dependent on the medications you're on, and can be changed each year without medical underwriting (guaranteed issue). Open enrollment is generally from 10/15 to 12/07 each year, but may vary. Costs of Part D Prescription coverage may be as little as $7 per month, but much higher if your medication needs are substantial. Important Things to Know About Medicare Supplement Coverage
